Exhibition Weeping Rocks & Rebellious Stones
Concert of Stone Age music
Call for: Drenthe Rock Art Mail Art (D.R.A.M.A.)

Introduction

On December 17, 2011 the exhibition "Weeping Rocks & Rebellious Stones" (Homo Sapiens Sapiens and the use of rock art since the early Stone Age (about 30,000 years before now) will start in  Art * Colony * Veenhuizen. The exhibition is a combination of  informative and artistic material.

On all continents artists left art work on rocks from early times on. To this day these works are inspiring and highly surprising by their size and precision. They are the subject of many expert speculation. Lascaux and Altamira are now etched as corner stones in the general knowledge of mankind, but there is much more: from Besov Nos in Karelia to rock drawings deep in the Sahara.

The exhibition is an anthology of this ancient art. In addition, it investigates how this legacy is studied, preserved, nurtured, threatened, exploited and robbed. Also ‘Weeping Rocks’ gives in insight in the processing of prehistoric visual arts by contemporary artists from the Netherlands, Finland and Estonia.

Mail Art Project

Homo Sapiens Sapiens  now lives in a time where progress and development are still important totems. The art of the rocks let her / him ask whether the great strides that have shaped our world apparently, are valid for the inner self. The strength and value of artistic expression seems to have changed very little since people started scratching stones.

We would like to invite artists of today and step back in time. How do you form and meaning back from a society without modern communications, industry, electricity, or even writing?

The assignment

Make an image/art work, preferably after visiting the exhibition in Veenhuizen, up to six pictures of one of the following messages of a prehistoric hunter to a collector or vice versa, who both cannot read or write:

A: SHOOT THE BEAR THAT FOUND THE HONEY AT THE INSURGENT STONE, BECAUSE WE WANT TO HARVEST THE DELICACY!
B: WE SHOT THE BEAR. COME TO WEEPING ROCK AND HARVEST THE HONEY!
